New Airport Administration Building

The Sebastian Airport has a new Administration Building which houses Sebastian Airport management and facilities personnel. There is a pilot briefing room that will soon be open and in operation. Watch our web site for the opening announcement.

The building consists of 10,000 square feet of space divided into four wings. One wing is hurricane proof and can be utilized for emergency management. The building is served by a complete power backup generator system.

The pilot briefing room, when completed, will have full computer and communications facilities to obtain weather information and file flight plan.

For rental space availibility in the Administration Building, contact Airport Manager, Joe Griffin for details (772 288-7013).

24/7 Self-Serve Aviation Fueling Facility in operation

The Sebastian Airport now features a new, 24/7 self-serve aviation fueling facility featuring Shell 100LL aviation fuel. The facility is located on the ramp in front of the new Administration Building on the southeast side of the airport. Most major credit cards are accepted. There is a discount for those who have a Shell Aviation Card. The latest fuel price is listed on the front page of our web site.

SUPERAWOS is here! Sebastian Airport CTAF/UNICOM 123.05

Pilots using the airport are now aided by our new automated AWOS system. This system provides instant weather and runway information to pilots using the airport, reducing unnecessary overflights of the airport and surrounding neighborhoods. By getting weather information ahead of time, pilots can set up their approach into the airport without flying over the field in an attempt to get a glimpse at the windsock for wind direction. The system automatically adapts to frequency congestion and offers the ability for pilots to perform radio checks. Please see the following link for more details: www.superawos.com

LED Taxiway lighting

Sebastian Municipal Airport enjoys being the first airport in the State of Florida (quite possibly in the world!) to employ low-cost, solar-powered, LED taxiway lighting. This system enables pilots to travel on lighted taxiways at night, while consuming no electricity, requiring practically no maintenance, and offering a design in which aircraft and vehicles can literally run over the lights with no damage to the aircraft or the light itself. Click here for more information on this lighting system as well as other exciting programs on the horizon to enhance the safety and efficiency of tomorrows airports.

Precision Approach Path Indicator (PAPI)

Both runways (4-22 & 8-26) at the Sebastian Airport now have PAPI installed and operating. PAPI is a light system positioned beside the runway that consists of two boxes of lights that provide a visual indication of a fixed-wing aircraft's position on the glidepath for the associated runway. The FAA standard for PAPI is the same as the ICAO's standard Visual Approach Slope Indicator (VASI).

The PAPI is located on the left side of the runway and can be seen up to five miles during the day and twenty miles at night. Each light box splits light output into two segments, red and white. Depending on the angle of approach, the lights will appear either red or white to the pilot. Ideally the total of lights will change from white to half red, moving in succession from right to left side. The pilot will reach the normal glidepath (usually 3 degrees) when there is an even split in red and white lights. If the aircraft is below the glidepath, red lights will outnumber white, if above the glidepath more white lights are visable.
